Stanthorpe War Memorial Project
The Stanthorpe War Memorial and Veterans Commemoration Project
The proposed project aims to upgrade and enhance the Stanthorpe War Memorial and the surrounding area. This project is significant both locally and nationally. Locally, it honours the history of Stanthorpe’s support for returning servicemen and women, which dates back to World War I. Nationally, it recognises the contributions of Australia’s service personnel across multiple conflicts.
The project will honour and promote understanding of the service, sacrifice and experiences of Australia’s service personnel by erecting two new memorials and modifying the current memorial to facilitate disabled access. This will provide a physical space for reflection and remembrance.
The project will contribute to Australia’s understanding of its wartime heritage by showcasing the history of Stanthorpe’s involvement in supporting returned servicemen and women including the relocation of the Turkish Gun, a war trophy.
